Excessive Sweating (Hyperhyrosis)
Excessive sweating (Hyperhydrosis)
Sweating is a normal physiological process in controlling our body temperature, however there are no guidelines in place to determine what is classified as ‘normal’ sweating. Sweating occurs throughout the body, including armpits, palms of the hands and soles of the feet amongst others.
With this in mind, excessive sweating then becomes down to the individuals perception and therefore, any sweating that interferes with daily life, causing embarrassment or distress can be classified as excessive. The medical diagnosis for this is hyperhydrosis.
Botulinum toxin A (Botox) can be used to treat these areas, it works by blocking the nerve impulses to the sweat glands turning them off and therefore reducing sweat production and secretion.
It takes approximately 2-4 weeks to take full effect and can last up to 6 months.
